The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) is the result of a bold, new initiative from the Hong Kong SAR Government to establish an integrated arts and cultural district with world-class arts and cultural facilities, on a 40 acre harbourfront site in West Kowloon. The Government has granted an endowment of around US$ 2.75 billion to the WKCDA to develop the cultural district, which will include 15 performing arts venues, a museum called M+ focusing on 20th and 21st century visual art, an exhibition centre, piazza areas and a wealth of supporting commercial and residential development - the first phase being targeted for completion in 2015.
Cultural Innovations was commissioned in August 2009, to carry out an exhaustive study and analysis of Museum and Exhibition Centre international governance structures and best practice throughout Europe, Asia and North America and were helped in this task by exhibition centre experts ECL. The final report and recommendations were presented to the WKCDA's Museum Committee during February 2011, shortly before acclaimed architects, Foster + Partners' City Park concept was selected as the preferred option for the development of the future arts and cultural hub.
It is anticipated that the governance study will be available for viewing on the CI website later this year.
